Amused by "Model as Muse"

In my quest to become a style icon, I must further my knowlege of fashion. This afternoon I discovered that, as I write this, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute Gala is in full swing. In accordance with this year's theme, "Model as Muse", John Galliano dressed and escorted actress Marion Cotillard.

I'm loving your shoes Mr. Galliano.

John Galliano's silvery suit was tame compared to this dramatic Isabel Toledo Cape worn by Vogue's Andre Leon Talley,

and Madonna's playful Louis Vuitton "can-can girl" look.

Isn't the fashion world fascinating?

1: Use Your Head
Think for yourself. Style is personal, beauty is subjective. Listen to the advice of fashion “experts“ and if it works for you, follow it. If it doesn‘t suit you, let it go. Keep abreast of the latest silhouettes and colors the Designers are showing on the runways of New York and Paris. View the fashions as suggestions which you may reconfigure, integrate into your wardrobe, or ignore and perhaps later reconsider. The most stylish people are trendsetters, not followers.

2: Love Your Body
Although clothes, unquestionably, look better on a body that's in peak physical condition, style isn’t about perfection. Stylish people often possess an unconventional beauty which they display confidently and without apology. In addition, despising your body can result in self destructive behavior and an even less desirable shape. When you love your body, "flaws" and all, you’ll be more likely to start caring for yourself with healthy eating, exercise and attention to your grooming and wardrobe.

3: Flaunt Your Assets
Got great legs? Show them off in shorts whenever it‘s appropriate. Wear colors that make those blue eyes pop. Flash your perfect teeth with a big smile. Toned arms are sexy in pushed up sleeves and adorned with a bold watch or chunky bracelet, as beautiful hands are showcased by a manicure and a signature ring. It's a shame to hide a beautiful butt under a long baggy shirt. When styling yourself, keep the emphasis on your physical strengths.

4: Indulge Your Voyeuristic Tendencies
Fashion inspiration is everywhere, so keep your eyes open. Mainstream retailers’ websites and in store displays are a great resource for keeping up with trends, while edgier styles can be found in the latest music videos. Hardcore fashionistas can find a wealth of styling ideas in the stills from the designers’ runway shows. Go ahead, take a peek.

5: Practice Safe Shopping
The allure of high end Designer labels can be intense, but remember, a stylish wardrobe doesn’t have to expensive, and an expensive wardrobe isn’t necessarily stylish. You can achieve a unique and upscale look by finding great, reasonably priced pieces and investing in custom tailoring.

6: Serve it With a Twist
You don’t need to accept your clothing exactly as it is. It’s perfectly acceptable to have your shorts taken up an inch to expose the slightest hint of your firm, sexy thighs. You have the freedom to take a basic, oxford blue dress shirt, have it fitted and change the white buttons to orange. Pants, hemmed to the perfect length, will make you look taller. You are one of a kind, your clothing can be too.

7: Make Style Your Drug of Choice
A flattering outfit has the power to affect your mood. Knowing that you look your best can be as uplifting as any mind altering substance, and feeling attractive is addictive. Develop the habit of caring for your style.

8: Be a Grower and a Shower
Evolve. As you move forward in your life, do so with your look. An updated hairstyle can give you a fresh outlook. Even something as simple as switching your baggy polo for a modern fitted version can boost your self image. Age gracefully and remain youthful by keeping your style fresh.

9: Take it Easy
Relax, It‘s only fashion.
